Part I: Dealing with an Increase in Job Candidates

You've seen the signs everywhere: a falling stock market, mass layoffs, corporate retrenchments. No matter what the economists call it, it sure looks and feels like a slowdown. But what do these events, and the threat of a recession mean to recruiters? How will a slowing job market change the way recruiters work? In this article, Part I of a two-part series, we'll discuss the most obvious and immediate result of a slowing economy: an increase in job candidates.

Accustomed to hiring in the tightest job market in a generation, talk of a candidate surge is certainly a switch. For many of us, the slowdown is a welcome phenomenon. Layoffs bring more resumes to the table, however, managing more candidates in uncertain times does have its challenges. Fact is, if not carefully managed, a surge in candidates could prove to be a curse rather than a blessing.

The following are some tried and true tips to stay productive in the economic slowdown:
