Life After Recruiting
By Christine Hirsch

Corporations are downsizing, search firms lack business, freelance work has dried up, and contractors are now doing contingency work. Its about enough to make a recruiter cry -- or leave the profession altogether. Difficult economic times are prompting more and more recruiters to switch to alternative career paths. Some are leaving permanently, others are just holding tight until the next economic upsurge comes along.

Demand for recruiters depends on the churn of the market. When the US economy was flourishing, recruiters switched out of corporate recruiting to follow entrepreneurial opportunities. The business environment created demand for top-performing recruiters with specialized skills. Niche expertise was at a premium and competition was tight. Growth opportunities kept the industry fresh and dynamic. In today's market, recruiters are fighting to survive rather than competing to be the best. Diversifying, rather than specializing is the norm. Recruiters much be able to cover more ground and be more flexible to win and keep engagements.

When recruiters turn outside of the industry, they commonly pursue careers in growth industries, return to a previous profession, or go back to school. Reverting back to an old field, one can rely on past experience to help get through the downturn. Going back to school can enhance one's qualifications and skill set. Advanced degrees in business and human resources are good choices for recruiters. Others may choose to examine current industry trends and enter growth industries. This might lead them to human resources, real estate, IT management, or health care.

For those exploring alternative career paths, the good news is that hiring is second nature to recruiters. Recruiters are a diverse group of professionals with highly marketable skills. Passion for work, confidence, listening abilities, and great communications skills are all traits that make recruiters stand out in a sea of candidates. Furthermore, recruiters are more resourceful than a typical job hunter. Knowing how to approach the job search and appropriately "package" one's self gives recruiters a definite edge.

Equipped with top skills and insights into the hiring process, recruiters will find work, even if it outside recruiting. Although the current state of the economy is forcing some recruiters to turn to alternative career paths, recruitment will always be a central focus of business. When the market starts to recover and recruiters are back in demand, a fresh perspective and increased contacts will create a stronger group of recruiters. These hard times will only make the industry stronger.
